Meet Our Newest Additions
Come to PECO Jungle Trek at PECO Primate Reserve, and you will see the newest addition to our black and white ruffed lemur family. Maro ("mom" and the matriarch of the group) had her newest baby on June 9. Maro keeps her babies in a box filled with hay and other nesting material during the first couple of weeks after a birth, just as she would keep them in a tree hole or other sheltered spot in the wild. The Zoo provides several different boxes and nesting materials, and Maro chooses which one she wants to use. We're not sure yet if this baby is a boy or girl.
The baby joins a big family, including the parents, brothers born in 1999 and 2000, and triplets born in 2003!
Both parents ended up in a zoo in Madagascar after they were donated by or confiscated from private owners. They came here in 1996. They're genetically valuable as new bloodlines to the US lemur population in zoos.
Learn more about what the Zoo is doing to help save lemurs.
And Ring-Tailed Babies Too!
Ring-tailed lemur twins were born on June 11! They are the first babies born to this female. The other members of the family group are her mother, her brother and an adult male who is "dad." The family and new babies are currently "behind the scenes," but will be back on exhibit in the summer of 2005.
